It was a strange year already here in the United States before today’s announcement that Google has eliminated Black History Month, Pride and other cultural events from its calendar.
Terrifying, too. This feverish DEI-ectomy is already taking a toll on vulnerable communities.
Power imbalances in general are exploited by the powerful over the dis-, un- or under-empowered. It’s no surprise that those most opposed to DEI are in the former group.
Animal Help Now was founded by three middle-aged white guys. These individuals, though – and I’m one of them – have appreciable understandings of social movements and sympathy for vulnerable populations. The organization’s focus is on helping animals, yes, but also on helping humans make the most of their compassionate impulses and drives.
The organization embraces diversity. We operate with the intention of being inclusive and equitable.
No one seems to be claiming that the country has achieved D, E or I. No, the stated reason DEI initiatives are being dismantled is that not only doesn’t DEI work, it actually has negative consequences – lethal, even! (See LA fires and DC plane crash.)
Sad funny, considering the trauma and yes, death, that will result from this dismantling. The last thing this country’s ignorant violent reprobates need is a license to harm; but maybe the powers that be completely disagree.
We stand shoulder to shoulder with the individuals, businesses, organizations, government agencies and officials and civil servants who reject this hateful and cynical development.
Just as we will celebrate Pride in June and Gandhi’s birthday in October, today and this month we will honor Black History, in word and deed.
